Cheshire to host the European Dodgeball Championships

Far from being simply the subject of a film of the same name, Dodgeball is a growing sport and this bank holiday weekend sees teams from all over the continent descend upon the Cheshire County Sports Club to compete in the European Championships.

Those in the area for the weekend who are taking advantage of accommodation near Chester will have the opportunity to witness the spectacle of a quintessentially American high school sport being played on an international stage.

For two days, men and women’s teams from as far afield as Romania, Slovenia and Italy will join local clubs from England and Northern Ireland. The women’s tournament will be held on Saturday with the men playing on Sunday.

The UK Dodgeball Association, which is based in Stevenage, is expecting supporters from across Europe to show their support, further helping the sport to grow in popularity. It is thought the surge in interest has come with people starting to appreciate its accessibility and the level of fast-paced excitement on offer for both viewers and players.

A home crowd will be welcome as the England Lions look to defend their title for the third year running following their victory over their Italian rivals at last year’s tournament in Cesenatico.

The women’s team will also look to secure victory over the Italians following a battle at the last tournament which saw them come back from defeat to their hosts to eventually lift the trophy.

More information can be found on the European Dodgeball Foundation’s official Facebook page.
