Runners gearing up for marathon event in Merseyside

A new half marathon and 10k event is set to take place in the Wirral area later this month.

Runners and spectators are expected to descend on the region in their droves to either challenge themselves, represent their favourite charities or cheer on friends and family as they cross the finishing line at New Brighton.

According to organisers, more than 1,000 runners have been entered into the 10k race that will use parts of the half-marathon course.

The route, which begins in Birkenhead Park, will take in much of the scenic countryside, avoiding residential areas where possible to minimise disruption to locals. The racers will run to Coastal Drive, where the 10k runners will finish. The more adventurous entrants, however, will continue along the Coastal Walk promenade, eventually finishing at the Dips.

Visitors are expected from up and down the country to participate in their inaugural half-marathon, or simply to spectate. Hotels are booking up fast, and every restaurant on the Wirral is preparing to welcome hungry runners, as well as their entourage who may wish to share in the runners carb-loading before or after the big race.

Entries are still open for both events, which take place on October 13. A number of the runners are thought to be particularly excited about the relatively flat course, which lends itself well to recording personal bests, and the organisers are encouraging all to get involved in what they expect to be an infectious atmosphere.
